Civ Ideas: The Romans

[:1]

For me, the Roman Empire feels like a finishpoint of ancient history, an age where the first and many civilizations began, boomed and eventually declined. The Romans picked up the best elements of previous and overwon civilizations and made themself an empire almost as big as the known world.

Main gimmick:

First of all, the Romans have an infantry based military. Their legions that conquered the world were build up with foot soldiers, with support from archers and cavalry.

The Romans could age up by building victory monuments, like a triumph arch and a victory column. For the final age-up building, perhaps they could build an amphitheatre or arena, as the Colloseum was build as a victory monument too, as it shows the wealth of the empire and many bizarre creatures and people from the empire's and the world's ends. In the final age, that arena could train or perhaps automaticaly spawn gladiator, as they were sometimes used in wars.

Amphitheatrum:

Gladiator - a fast moving and strong infantry unit, excelling versus infantry (age 4)

Barracks:

Spearman - infantry unit, strong versus cavalry (age 1)

Legionarius (legion soldier) - infantry unit, strong versus infantry (age 2)

Archery Range:

Funditor (slinger) - ranged unit, good versus other ranged units (age 2)

Veles (skirmisher) - ranged unit throwing a javelin (age 2 or 3)

Sagittarius (archer) - ranged unit (age 3)

Stables:

Light cavalry - cavalry unit (age 2) (refers to Numidian light cavalry)

Eques (knight) - cavalry unit (age 3) (the Roman nobles on horses)

Temple:

Fairly weak compared to the other civs.

Siege Workshop:

The ultimate siege force with ballistas, siege towers and onagers.

Naval:

Normal to good.

Fortress:

Praetorian Guard - a strong allround infantry unit (age 3)

Technology:

Viae Romanae - increases movement speed of land units (perhaps of some specific to balance the game)

Aquaductus - increases food production at farms caused by a better irrigation

Please keep in mind these are just some rough ideas. Feel free to add, adjust or correct with other and better ideas and additions, as I welcome constructive criticism. Excuse me for my bad English.

Cheiroballistras could have been interesting: Cheap, spammable ballistas held in the hand of a man. They'd be humanoid, and just as delicate. But not as population or price heavy.

To be honest, I skipped on Rome a bit because I felt it would be too easy and yet difficult to make truly unique.

|||Well,I'd like to make a suggestion in the name of Spearman,I think the name Hasttatus is better than Spearman, because Spearman would be the same thing that the Greeks,I think the Hasttatus could be a warrior with a spear, armored with a light shield and,of course, strong against cavalry. But it is only a sugestion.
|||Also, where are the Pilums?|||

DynasticPlanet5, I allready tought you skipped the Romans on purpose. Nevertheless I started this topic to bundle as much opinions as possible, as those can lead to a blue-print for a really unique Roman civilization.

I love to hear other ideas!

I did, but not to forget forever. Just get the more challenging ones out of the way... but I did have some ideas already in my head. One of them would have been to have the Hand Ballista in the Siege Workshop because the concept of humanoid siege engines is fun.

I am hoping they represent the different forms of the Romans in each age.

Each Age represents the 4 main periods of Roman History (now the name of each age is just what the period is not the actual age name, seeing as they have 4 age names already) How they advance, well its somewhat hard to do military triumphs like killing units, especially in PvP matches or maybe just have a building made to allow age up.

Basically in the first age, the Roman Civ is an exact mirror to the Greek civ.

Age 1: Early Republic

Similarities:

-Same Town Center, Houses, early tech as greek civ.

Key differences:

-Barracks: Allows training of a Hoplite (1 population) unit in Age 1, acts as the spearman unit for romans but is just as strong as a greek spearmen.

Age II: Late Republic (Before the Marian Reforms but after the Scipio Reforms)

Becoming more "roman" in Age II, buildings looking for roman, etc.

Units:

-Velites- (Skirmisher Unit) (2 Pop)- Easily killed in close combat

-Hastati- (Skirmisher/Hoplite mix) (1 pop or 2 since they are a hybrid unit) Carry a pilum for close combat and have Javelins too throw at range. Is the upgrade to the Hoplite unit from Age 1 making Hoplites obsolete (However Hoplites don't turn into Hastati, so any created remain)

-Light Cavalry Unit- (2 pop) mainly used to harass archers and small numbers of enemies

Navy: Roman navy is just the Greek type. Romans get no bonus for their navy since they are mainly a Infantry Civ. Maybe allow troops to be garrisoned into Triremes giving a small boost to attack, since the main way romans used a navy was to ram the other ship and allow roman swords to prevail over a possibly superior enemy navy skills.

Age III: Marian Reforms and Julius Caesar Classic Legion

-Archer Unit added and Velites now obselete

-Now the Legionary Unit is added making Hastati obselete

All units wear the same armor (so all gear just makes all units for Age III look the same but obviously offer different bonuses with the Classic Legion look)

Cavalry is a little better and able to handle more units but still isn't up to par to say the egyptians and other civs that are more horse focused

Catapult unit added

Age IV: Empire

Nothing much changes here unit wise other than 1 unit added

Ballista unit added

Praetorian Guard is an advisor card and cost 3 pop (mainly a defensive unit, quickly trained and can only stay in a close proximity to (well I think this unit should be trained at the town center) the town center

Colosseum is able to be built in this age and allows training of gladiator units (3 Pop and with 3 types of gladiators: 1 built for heavy combat but weak vs archers, 1 built for harassing archers/cav weak vs infantry and 1 that is good overall against all units but weak vs cavalry

Just a few ideas...so...yeah :P

Zhou, your Romans dont have a gameplay gimmick.

In any case, my view on Rome...

Gimmick: Roman structures cost a bit less wood and Roman melee soldiers strike a bit faster than usual. Beyond that, they are fairly straight forward and are mostly balanced with some unique units.

Barracks

Hasta: A basic spearman. Counters horses! Age 1

Gladius: A swordsman, an all around useful soldier with a tower shield. Age 2

Foederati: A barbaric soldier conscriptwho can cut through infantry while berserkingand hits with minor splash. Age 3.

Archery Range

Baelaric Slings: A basic sling that counters enemy archers. Age 2

Auxilla: Syrian concripts with a bow to counter enemy infantry. Age 3

Pilum: A ranged spearman that is highly durable. Counters Cavalry, weak to infantry. Age 4

Sagittari: A conscripted Horse archer. Hits and runs. Age 4.

Stable

Maurorum: Moorish conscripted light cavalries. Move very fast and counter archers and villagers. Age 2

Equites: Mounted infantry. Has the weaknesses of an infantry man with the strengths of a horseman. Not weak to spears, but watch out for infantry counters. Age 3

Equestrian: Elite, powerful, expensive horsemen. Deal extra damage to buildings and not much else buit are well rounded otherwise. Age 4

Fortress

Legionnaire: The ultimate soldier. Trains decently fast and hits relatively hard and wears the best in Roman equipment. Pricy! Age 4

Onager: A very long ranged city killer. Without needs to pack or unpack, the Onager seems too good, but it takes longer and more shots to kill a building than most city siegers like Pantinlonlons. Age 4

Siege Workshop

Scorpio: A powerful single target arrow siege. Hits very powerfully but has minimum range and no splash. Age 3.

Battering Ram: Breaks structures and only structures. Age 3

Ballista: A splashing long ranged siege unit. Age 4

Cheiroballistra: A Human with a handheld ballista. Not as strong as the actual ballista, but a mini version that is healable, takes advantage of Ranged Armory techs, and can be spammed due to low house needs. Also has much smaller building power and reach than regular siege. Age 4

Temple

Jovian: A basic priest of Jupiter. Heals and converts. Age 3

Here's my idea on how legionaries should work:

They should be trained in groups of 10, with one of them being a centurion. The centurion functions as a support unit. It is basically the same as a legionary, only their mohawks are sideways and they would give an aura buff. Legionaries are equipped with both javelins and swords. Basically, first they throw a javelin, and then it has a cooldown where they cannot throw. So then they run up and attack with melee. If the enemy runs away, they will throw javelins again once the cooldown ends until they are within gladius range. These "centuries" would be expensive and available in either age 3 or 4, with a long train time.

edit: i appologize for any uncapitalized letters or other mistakes, my phone really doesnmt like these forums and wonmt let me do much about it. it bothers me greatly.

Edit 2: I went in and corrected my typograhical errors, besides the ones in my first edit note. I couldn't leave it like that.

Anyone like this idea? I really think the idea of a centurion leading a "century" of legionaries should be represented somehow. A century is traditionally supposed to be made up of 100 troops, but that would be a little extreme for this game. Alternatively, centurions could be just a separate unit (be it regular or from an advisor), but then you don't really have the concept of a century represented, which is a shame. I like a lot of other ideas presented here though, such as the aging up through victory monuments, the colosseum training gladiators, and praetorians being an advisor unit.

On the note of gladiators, I think it could possibly be interesting if each one had randomized gear (probably from a limited selection of possibilities however). Some gladiators could be very effective, while others might not be very good. The Colosseum would basically be like a unit lottery.
