[Faction] Israelites

[:1]The Kingdom of Israel existed as a monarchy during the period of 1030 - 930 BCE (the game seems to pull roots from 1500-1 BCE) and was situated on the southeast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Kingdom itself conquered and subdued and fought wars against their neighbors over the course of this period, before their collapse and the civil war within that followed.

Reasons of their Inclusion
-Israelites are a faction unseen in most RTS's or games even though they were a powerful ancient empire
-They'd include a unique architecture style and culture unseen in the other factions
-They have a unique and antagonistic relationship with the Egyptians over the course of their founding and existence.
-So far the game seems very Mediterranean-based (Save for Celts) and the Israelites are right on the Mediterranean, some sources even state that later Israelite Kings held vast merchant and war fleets.
-Room to add the Philistines as their enemy faction, there were plenty of other kingdoms around the Israelites they warred/allied with as well!

Features:
Offerings
To advance in Age, Israelite Villagers must be tasked onto a Temple where they give "offerings" in resources (based on the age and what the next age is) as they stand around praising and giving offerings it will slowly trickle your resources towards the cost of the next age. When the cost has been reached the Age will advance. Allowing you to slowly, and steadily, work towards your next Age instead of having to have all the resources at once, as well as letting you speed up the rate by tasking more villagers onto it.

Numbers Game
Similar to the Egyptians, the Israelite armies consist of masses of cheaper units backed up by powerful Fortress and Advisor units. Their units are very specialized in this regard, so rank and file anti-cavalry forces, anti-ranged, and anti-infantry will need to be assembled and ordered properly to play them at their peak. Throw some potent Advisor Units into the fray to specialize your forces a bit and throw down with the best of them!

Militia
The Israelites can hire Militia from their Town Center, Militia on their own are a very weak, very cheap, unit that will rally to the call of battle to defend your town. They hire quickly, are pretty cheap, and defend well, but are easily trumped by any actual military units in a confrontation and cannot strike structures.

Units

Spearman (Copper Age) The Spearman is the backbone of the offensive Israelite army. They have lower health but their damage output is high for their cost, a full column can effectively stop cavalry in their tracks. Bonus vs Cavalry Appearance: Long Team Colored/White striped tunic, headband, long hair, goatee, round shield, sandals and bracers, long spear

Swordsman (Bronze Age) Basic Israelite Infantry, the Swordsman is the backbone of their forces, solid health and tanky, lower damage, they're meant to draw the fire of enemy forces and cut down other infantry. Bonus vs Infantry Appearance: Vest, Team Colored/White Striped Kilt, headband, large tower shield and sickle sword, longer hair, beard, leg/shin guards and bracelets

Slinger (Bronze Age) Slingers are the anti-Ranged Ranged of the Israelites, their rocks will rain agony upon enemy ranged units. They have fast attack speed, low damage, and low health and need to be protected by walls of Swordsmen. Bonus vs Ranged Appearance: Long tunic, short hair, beard, big sling of ammo across chest, sling

Archer (Bronze Age) Archers are the backbone of Israelite Ranged forces, they are most effective when providing support for a line of Swordsmen or Spearmen. They pick off enemy infantry with impunity, and their low cost (and subsequently low health and damage) means masses of them will rain arrows upon your foes. Bonus vs Infantry Appearance: Leather chest, Team Color/White striped kilt, rough hair and goatee, shortbow

Priest (Copper Age) Priests are the healers of the Israelites, they are used to support forces by healing individual units or can be used to slightly boost your economy by blessing nearby units with increased movement speed. Priests themselves are non-combat units and die very easily under fire. Appearance: Short hair, beard, long team colored robes and hood.

Prophet (Bronze Age) Prophets are the conversion unit of the Israelite army, they can convert at decent ranges and with a minor AOE to their conversions (minor minor, we're talking 3 units at most). Outside of conversion the Prophet has a nice line of sight, but has zero combat capabilities and will drop quickly if attacked.
Appearance: Long striped robes, staff, huge grey beard and long grey hair.

Chariot (Bronze Age) The Israelites' only lower tier Cavalry option, the Chariot provides them with a fast attacking, expensive cavalry option that mows through enemy columns. Bonus vs Infantry and Ranged Appearance: Two leather armored soldiers with hoods on a chariot, long spear

Golden Lion Chariot (Silver Age) Elite cavalry of the Israelite forces, the Golden Lion Chariot is a sight to behold on the battlefield as its riders storm the flanks of your foes and cut down their units. Golden Lion Chariots are expensive, but good all around with no specific bonuses. Appearance: Three soldiers in full golden armor on a chariot with a golden lion face on the front pulled by two horses, two of the men wielding spears.

Judge (Advisor Unit - Jephthah the Honorable) (Silver Age) Judges are potent soldiers on the battlefield that inspire nearby allies to fight harder. Just having one leading your forces is enough to turn cowards into stalwart veterans. Judges provide damage resistance to all nearby forces but themselves are not combat oriented. Appearance: Full chest armor with cape and half robe, striped kilt, large round shield and sword, short hair, beard

Samsonite (Advisor Unit - Samson the Mighty) (Silver Age) A powerful siege infantry, the Samsonite tears apart enemy machinery and structures with his bare hands and the blessings of heaven behind them. High health, high damage, with bonuses vs structures and siege. Appearance: Vest, Bracers, Barefoot, Bandages and necklace, striped kilt, long hair and goatee.

Giantslayer (Advisor Unit - David the Brave) (Silver Age) The Giantslayer is a very powerful special Slinger unit, Giantslayers are normal Slingers with more health, more damage, and better bonuses vs Ranged, but also gain a slight bonus vs Infantry as well. Appearance: Chest armor, full ammo belt, sling, long hair and beard, headband.

Chosen (Advisor Unit - Samuel the Chosen) (Silver Age) The most powerful infantry available to the Israelites, Chosen are all around monstrosities and bring the hand of God to the battlefield. Armed with swords and full shields they charge into the fray cutting down foes. High health, mediocre damage, high cost. Appearance: Full body armor, sash, helmet, large tower shield, sickle sword

Holy Lion Chariot (Advisor Unit - Solomon the Wise) (Golden Age) If the Golden Lion Chariot is a blessed thing to behold, the Holy Lion Chariot is divine. A beautiful golden chariot pulled by two Lions and with two grand swordsmen situated upon the platform ready to slay in the name of the Kingdom. Gains bonuses against Infantry and Ranged. Appearance: Large golden chariot pulled by two bright lions, trumpet, swords, shields, chest armor and striped kilts.

Champion (Advisor Unit - Jonathan the Loyal) (Golden Age) The only non-Chariot cavalry available to the Israelites, the Champion is a swift and potent cavalry unit that can be used to flank enemy formations and annihilate siege units. Armed with a shield and spear the Champion rides onward in the name of the Kingdom and fights deep behind enemy lines. Bonus vs Siege Appearance: Full armor, golden barding on horse, large shield and spear.

Cute but unnecessarily political, has nothing to do with the topic.

Please take your modern hatreds and debates elsewhere, we're talking about an Ancient Kingdom here.

|||

That's a great idea. Unfortunately since the world suffers a time of antisemitism this might not catch.

By the way I am fromIsrael.

|||

Edited since some posts were removed and what I previously said to another person is now directed to the OP, no offense meant to the OP :P

I personally like the idea of an Israel civ ingame along with other civ possibilities if they were included.

|||its a good idea however it wont catch on seeing as its so controversial its not like the egyptians and greeks who are undisputed classic civilizations not to mention all the jokes that would follow about isreal|||

Okay, let's look at this maturely.

The issue hereis akin to having Hindu in Age of Mythology: someone would file lawsuit claiming religious slander if it doesn't fit their views. Its wierd, I encounter someone who holds nationalism to some place or another. Back in my AoC days of crafting, it was the Incas as I met a lot of Peruvians and South Americans who wanted their country represented their way or I was ust an ass.

On a more analytical note: you need a converting religious unit! Quests like Losing Your Religion depend on the ability to convert structures. Maybe the Israeli Temple (or even Synogogue) could have a second Priest... a Cohen perhaps or a Rabbi? They also have WAY to many Age 1 units. In PvP, having most of your military available before Aging up is going to be overwhelming. Leave the Spearman in Copper and up most of the others to Bronze. Other civs only have Age 1 Spearmen, this shouldn't break that rule. Otherwise Aging up is mostly about Armory upgrades and1 new troop. Not the most exciting of stuff.

It's a well detailed and well researched thread: I actually have much respect! If you want to have this in storage, post a link in the thread in my signature and 'll add you to the civ index in case this ever gts forgotten.

|||I think this is a great idea and very well thought out. it would add alot to the game especially with there history with egypt
|||There can actually be a genuine story in a campaign with Israelites andEgyptians.|||

To me I think the Religious Slander thing is just one of those things I try to ignore.
You won't please everyone, technically if they can find something to
whine about with how I laid out their units, then people should be
whining about Egyptians and Greeks, I'm sure someone can be like "Ptah
being the most important is soooo incorrect why is he the Golden Age age up temple?!". To me, I'd rather have fun
with the game and ignore the religious debates regarding it, this can
be fun and well done without worrying about them, you worry about them
and you only hurt yourself and let them win. I
tried to ride the line of having religion and still being tasteful and
not debateable, I think the only thing that ends up questionable is the Samsonite being a melee fist fighting building destroyer has religious tones that I think I could avoid if I had to.

Yea I don't know why I derped not having a Religious Converting unit.. I might add a "Prophet" with some conversion and line of sight bonuses. I'm also kinda torn on whether the Priest would buff movement speed passively in an aura, or just autotarget random unbuffed units. Also would Synagogue be a better name for the Temple?

I'm going to go with your advice and probably leave only Spearmen in Age 1, I had contemplated it originally and then thought it would just be bland, but now that I realize the ability to hire Anti-Infantry in T1 is kinda broken and leaves T2 completely empty.

You're more than welcome to add it to the index, I'd love to be a part of it, I actually did post a link on the farthest back page the day I posted this to try to drum up some advertising kinda ;)

So if I may ask, what ideas about them appeal to you? What kinda stuck out as "oh that's cool" or "that's unique!" (and yes Egypt vs Israel was one of the conflicts I was thinking of while studying up on this, I realize that like the Greeks/Egyptians, Israel had a lot of contacts with the Egyptians as well)

And to the rest of you who have nothing better to do but try to flame, just please take it elsewhere, we're trying to have an intelligent discussion.

My thanks to those that provided legit feedback and discussion, and could be mature about it, you have no idea how much that means to me. Its nice to see this community isn't all.. questionable.

|||I like it. It would be cool to see the Egyptians / Israelites / Philistines.|||

Yet Isreali culture survives until today. Odd how insignificant they must have been. It's not like their biblical stories (the more rooted in reality ones) are used to help piece together ancient history to help find the likes of Assyrians, Hittites and history on Babylonia... that'd be absurd!

|||

Alright look I've already reported about half the freaking thread for being off topic idiots, please don't join them.

This is getting out of hands kids, please stop going off on tangents because you have an issue with a modern freaking country. That is completely different than an ancient civilization that united parts of Mesopotamia and went to war with some of the strongest of the time and came out on top

I should figure mentioning the Israelites would drag out any bigot or kiddie with keyboard badass syndrome..

Thank you to those who have tried to keep this discussion legit, and not ventured off in the realm of absurdity

|||

I like the idea... But since Microsoft is a gigantonourmous company that has to watch its PR and political sensitivities, I doubt it would happen.

The unit list is a little light though, and id say that add some more civ specific units, expand the time period and generalize the civilization a little more. Add roman era units like Sicarii

As I said though, its a minefield for political sensibilities.

|||

It kinda sucks that political sensitivities prevent a gaming company from introducing a faction to the game, I can see the issues but still kinda sucks.

I had completely forgotten about Sicarii, they'd make a pretty awesome Advisor unit I think, then I could probably move Judges to be a normal unit.

|||They should have only gold as a resource, with every resource point producing gold directly!!
