I played a lot of Age of Empires 3 ever since the day it came out, and I do have to say that this game is disappointing to me in comparison to it. I'm sure there's plenty of options and features that could be added to update the game and bring a better experience to players, but let me point out what I believe is really holding the game itself and it's player base back right now.
-While matchmaking is an option, the truth is, nobody likes it. Hardly any people use it as it is, and it pairs you up unfairly 90% of the time. I read somewhere about this game using the TrueSkill system to match players. And that's fine, but there really needs to be a higher level of selection and availability of players to play against each other. One of my suggestions is to use a game browser. Similar to the one in AoE 3, so that players can know what they're up against before a match begins, as well as choose who they want to play against and more easily organize games.
-A ranking system would be a good idea too. Even with TrueSkill in play, it would be nice to be able to identify a player's skill level more immediately through a ranking system. And a tally of wins and losses. It gives the player a better feeling of accomplishment, and the fact that you actually have something to work toward, rather than just mindlessly playing. There could always be unranked PvP for practice, or just fun, as well.
So there's my input, whether anyone agrees or a forum employee will take it into consideration is another story, but I do believe that this would be the first steps to a more successful and enjoyable game.
I have to disagree with you, as I said in another post, a matchmaking system is the best way to make a competitive ladder with a real score avoiding people of kicking from their room ppl that maybe can win them..., a game browser it's ok for unranked games, but definitively this matchmaking system is the best option for ranked games so you can't choose your enemies :).
What is true is that we need a better ranking system, receiving more or less points depending on if our opponent is "stronger" o "weaker" than you in the general ladder.
What I really miss from PVP matches is (apart from replays) is the information at the end of the game (gathered resources, military points, units created, killed, workers,....) it's always good to see if you messed up with something in order to improve :)
